Old-world treasures for contemporary living

Family heirlooms and antiques don’t often fit modern-day lifestyles. This is particularly true in Western Europe where interior design trends more toward minimalism—especially for younger generations in the major metropolitan areas where they live and work. We save these exquisite pieces to give them renewed significance and new life in your home.

The road less traveled

All of our pieces come from private estates and chateaux in remote parts of Europe including historic towns and villages in France, Spain, and Switzerland. Avoiding big cities and established marketplaces allows us to acquire the finest and most compelling interiors never offered before (some have remained in the same families, preserved for centuries).

Not your average antiques dealer

While our website always has an available inventory of antique furniture and objets, we also offer several personalized sourcing and design services. Many designers and individuals don’t have time to travel around Europe sourcing unique pieces for their projects, so we do all the work for you—from travel and sourcing to purchasing and shipping. If you want, you can even join us on the journey!

Our team

Chris Goff, Founder + CEO

Valuing quality over quantity is something Chris Goff learned early. Growing up in an idyllic part of Northern California, he spent summers in Paris and Provence with his French grandmother and great-grandmother, who exposed him to European culture, design, antiques, and the importance of preserving history. After graduating UC Berkeley, Chris spent 10-years working as a French translator for a variety of organizations before moving into technology, where he led user operations for a Google-backed start-up. But, the backroads of Europe called and he founded Upper Road West as a way to combine his love for design, antiques, and travel.

Dominic Testa, Co-Founder

San Francisco native Dominic Testa spent nearly a decade in the Bay Area real estate market, curating the overall design themes for new construction projects and loft developments with Seed Interiors and Vanguard Properties, and later with San Francisco-based design firm Arthur McLaughlin & Associates. Dominic’s green thumb and passion for plants eventually led him to Flora Grubb where the horticulture expert inspired designers, and styled shoots for Sunset Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, and furniture maker Fermob among others. Dominic now lives in London where continues to combine his passion for plants and design under the Colony + State label.

Lindsay Upson, Co-Founder + Visual Design Director

Lindsay Upson has traveled the world—with her camera in hand—documenting different cultures interacting with their natural environments, and scenes of everyday life. A Marin County native, she studied at Northeastern University and the Brooks Institute of Photography, then embarked on a career in the visual arts which eventually led to styling and shooting for marketing campaigns and interior designers. Lindsay’s life experiences—from living on a sailboat for several years to setting up home in a Mongolian yurt in the woods—have informed her unique visual point of view. When she isn’t traveling for Upper Road West or styling interiors projects, Lindsay spends her days at the beach or in the woods; and lives on a historic sailboat with her family.
